Educate the Language

Ecological Awareness and Emotional Intelligence
for a sustainable world

Language drives emotions, and emotions drive action.

The words we choose deeply influence how we feel, how we connect with others, and ultimately, how we act. In this webinar, we will explore the relationship between language and emotions, reflecting on their impact on society and how they shape our present and future.

We will also introduce The Stories We Live By, a free ecolinguistics course offered by the University of Gloucestershire and featured on the UNSDG Learn platform. Join us to discover how language can become a tool for transformation toward a more sustainable and conscious future.

We are honoured and thrilled to have with us:
Arran Stibbe, Professor of Ecological Linguistics
Mariana Roccia: Research Impact Consultant
Jessica Hampton: Environmental Sociolinguist

📍 17th December, 6pm CET/Vienna Time

Jessica Hampton is an environmental sociolinguist dedicated to addressing the climate crisis and advocating for environmental justice through linguistics. Since 2022, she has been working as a postdoctoral research associate, focusing on amplifying marginalised voices and promoting new stories-to-live-by. In her current role, she explores the relationship between place, belonging, and well-being in schools, while also serving as co-convenor of the International Ecolinguistics Association.

Arran Stibbe is a Professor of Ecological Linguistics at the University of Gloucestershire. He has an academic brackground in both linguistics and human ecology and combines the two in his research and teaching. He is the founder of the International Ecoliguistics Association, and is author of Ecolinguistics: language, ecology and the stories we live by (Routledge) and Econarrative: ethics, ecology and the search for new narrative to live by (Bloomsbury). He was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy for teaching excellence, and has published widely on ecolinguistics.

Mariana Roccia is a research impact consultant at the University of Gloucestershire, co-convenor of the International Ecolinguistics Association and co-editor of the book series Bloomsbury Advances in Ecolinguistics. Since 2019, Mariana has been exploring the impact of ecolinguistics on people's live, and how raising awareness of the connection between language and ecology can contribute to value alignment from both professional and personal dimensions. She regularly participates in events and activities promoting awareness of the role that language plays in addressing ecological issues and encouraging action beyond academia. Her research focuses on the articulation of ecolinguistics to other disciplines, such as religious and literaly studies, and the environmental humanities.
